With differentiation, we now encounter the core of analysis. Most functions in engineering mathematics are not only continuous, they are even differentiable. With this differentiation, we now have the opportunity to determine the extrema of such functions. This is the essential application of this theory. But also the monotonic behaviour of functions can be assessed with this theory, and last but not least, we can often determine the zeros of differentiable functions using an efficient method.
