This contribution investigates translations of catechisms into non-European languages during Christian missionary activities between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries. It focuses on the Lord’s Prayer, given its centrality in Christian catechetical practice, giving insights into the translation strategies and language teaching methods employed by missionaries. Through typographical analysis and attention to instructional aids, the chapter examines the integration of the Lord’s Prayer into catechetical literature and how it was influenced by linguistic and cultural exchanges. The findings tell more about the intended audience of missionary catechisms and hint at the reach and availability of these texts among European scholars, while also noting the scarcity of American language representations in multilingual collections.
