In his published writings, Tocqueville noticeably strives not to strain the denominational differences within Christianity. Therefore, he does not only subsume the various Protestant “sects in the United States” “within the great Christian unity” but also emphasizes that the “morality of Christianity is the same everywhere” (DA I,473). Moreover, he tries to portray Protestantism and Catholicism (see Chap. 46) as equally suitable religions for democracy (DA I, 467 ff.). Apparently, Tocqueville’s political goal to overcome the (revolutionary) state of irreligion and the hostility between religion and politics in his homeland France should not fail due to intra-religious conflict lines. Mainly for the same reason, church and state should also remain separate from each other to avoid the political favoring (or disadvantaging) of Catholics or Protestants and thus to prevent the reopening of old rifts and struggles from the post-reformatory era.

摘要
