At first glance, it seems that liberals cannot be good patriots. The exaggerated individualism of liberals, as it is sometimes claimed, fundamentally excludes them from rising up for their homeland or even sacrificing their lives for it. Even if one sees a duty-based morality in liberal morality, it seems to be limited to mere duties of omission. Positive duties towards individuals or even collectives do not seem to exist, let alone virtues.
