Freedom
摘要
For Tocqueville, freedom is one of the standards by which the democratization of society must be measured. But he was not only concerned with individual rights. Collective freedoms are also at the heart of his work. According to Tocqueville’s credo, these must be defended and extended because a democracy that only knows elected representatives between citizens and the state leads to an impoverishment of citizenship. Without the possibility of additional spaces for political and social engagement, the people would only be passive. For Tocqueville, the right of citizens to form the political will goes hand in hand with the right to inform themselves, to assemble, to organize, to make their own ideas heard in public and to be engaged.
