‘Feelings’ and ‘passions’ are topics of central importance in Tocqueville’s democracy theory. This is evident, for example, in the structure of the second, more critical volume of Democracy in America. This volume is divided into four major parts, the first part deals with the influence of democracy on the intellectual movement in the United States and the second part examines the influence of Democracy on the Sentiments of the Americans. In the third part, Tocqueville investigates the influence of democracy on mores properly so called, and the fourth part finally deals with the influence that democratic ideas and sentiments exercise on political society.
