The issue of national federalism in the United States and its various dimensions remained a contentious topic long after the ratification of the Constitution (1787/88). Not only was the division of powers between the Union and the states repeatedly debated, but the Union as a common legal area was also massively questioned, especially by the Southern states. However, the establishment of the USA also encouraged discussions about the potential for experiencing freedom and democracy within federal systems in Europe.
