Franz (later Francis) Lieber was born into a once-prosperous merchant family in Berlin. He witnessed Napoleon’s entry into Berlin in 1807 and was severely wounded in the Napoleonic Wars in 1815. During his studies, he expressed sympathy for the German gymnastics movement, which led to his imprisonment. After graduating from the University of Jena and obtaining his doctorate from the University of Halle, he participated in the Greek War of Independence. For a period, he resided in Italy, where he maintained close contact with Georg Berthold Niebuhr.
