Bossuet is one of the most striking French personalities of the seventeenth century. He not only left a name as a theologian and brilliant preacher, but also as a political advisor and teacher and is also considered a brilliant stylist. His influence on Tocqueville is not limited to the level of style, but is also found at the level of philosophy of history (Boesche 1992, 38). Like Bossuet, Tocqueville recognises God’s will in the course of history; however, he interprets it as a will that is directed towards equality.
