摘要

The Americans whom Tocqueville discovered during his stay in the United States are a people focused on practice and not on pure theory. When they seek to acquire knowledge, it is only because they expect to use this knowledge in the pursuit of their practical purposes. Knowledge, therefore, only has value for them if it is also useful. In this respect, they are the heirs of the founders of the new natural sciences, among whom the Englishman Francis Bacon (1561–1626) occupies an important place.
