The approximately 550-page volume contains texts spanning a period of over 30 years and begins with the 1826 Thèse de licence de droit français written by the then 21-year-old Tocqueville. The main part of the volume consists of the so-called Écrits académiques, writings, and especially lectures that Tocqueville composed or delivered as a member of the Société académique de Cherbourg, the Académie des sciences morales et politiques and then also the Académie française.
