Tocqueville’s American experiences were based on a nine-month study trip through the United States, which he and Gustave de Beaumont undertook between May 11, 1831, and February 20, 1832, on behalf of the French government. This journey resulted in three publications: the work Du système pénitentiaire aux États-Unis, et de son application en France (1833) about the prison system of the United States, which Beaumont and Tocqueville co-authored, Tocqueville’s main work De la démocratie en Amérique, which was published in two volumes in 1835 and 1840, and Beaumont’s Marie, ou L’esclavage aux États-Unis, a work, which was also published in 1835.
