Tocqueville was an ambitious politician. His speeches in Parliament are among the important testimonies of contemporary political debates in France. Thus, Tocqueville made the 1848 revolution the subject of several dramatic speeches, which excellently revealed the core of his liberal thinking. Three of these speeches deserve special attention. In the first speech of January 27, 1848, Tocqueville warned 18 years after the July Revolution of a new revolution, which indeed broke out a month later. He criticizes the reign of Louis-Philippe, which was characterized by a shift of power in favour of the executive and a decline in individual and collective freedoms.
