The term “intersectionality” aims at the simultaneity, overlap and entanglement, or mutual reproduction of various forms of discrimination and exclusion. This refers to forms of discrimination such as racism, sexism, classism, anti-semitism, religious persecution, homophobia, transphobia, anti-feminism or disability hostility. Crucial for the concept of intersectionality is that the individual forms of discrimination do not simply exist side by side, but their interdependencies and intersections lead to their own discrimination experiences. In classical intersectionality research, the three categories of class, “race” and gender are considered. In this context, one also speaks of “Triple Oppression” or “Race-Class-Gender-Oppression”. In newer approaches, other categories, such as age or body, are also included.
