In the literature, Tocqueville’s writings on Algeria are assessed very differently. The disputes tend to focus on two questions: Why did Tocqueville develop such a strong interest in French colonial policy in Africa, and what lessons did he draw from it for his theoretical work? Some answer these questions by distinguishing between the theorist and the politician.
