The reception of Tocqueville in Europe began shortly after the publication of De la démocratie en Amérique. Especially in the context of the newly emerging sciences, Tocqueville quickly became a classic. John Stuart Mill, for example, found in Tocqueville’s magnum opus a topical examination of the democratic problems he himself had analyzed. His articles in the London Review and the Edinburgh Review on the work of his French correspondent show clearly why he was so enthusiastic about his scholarly achievement. In particular, he praised the “new character” of Tocqueville’s political theory, which no longer relied on traditional doctrines and political orientations, but focused on the dynamics of social and political processes and on the criteria of political action (Mill 1963–1991, 18, 47–90, 153–204).

摘要
