摘要
On 23 April 1835, Alexis de Tocqueville, who had just published the first volume of De la démocratie en Amérique, and Gustave de Beaumont, who had just finished Marie ou l’esclavage aux États-Unis. Tableau de mœurs américaines embarked on a ten-week stay in England, which they extended with a six-week trip to Ireland a decade before the Great Famine. This trip had a lasting effect on both thinkers. Beaumont was so fascinated by Ireland that he decided to write a study.
