Alexis Charles-Henri Clérel de Tocqueville was born in Verneuil-sur-Seine on 29 July 1805, the third son of Hervé and Louise Madeleine de Tocqueville. His father, who, unlike many French aristocrats during the French Revolution, had not emigrated from France, became a leading administrative official during the Restoration who, not least through his seat in the Chamber of Peers, took an active part in the parliamentary debates of the 1820s and 1830s and remained an important adviser to his son throughout his life.
