The French mathematician and philosopher René Descartes is regarded as one of the most significant scientists of the seventeenth century. With his work Discours de la méthode he ushered in a new era in philosophy and the natural sciences. In one of the appendices to this work, he included a remarkable rule concerning the number of zeros of polynomials, which was largely overlooked by later generations.
