Living a self-determined life with a chronic illness generally means that the interdependent factors of age, health, housing, and quality of life form the framework of the care arrangement. Ideally, the ongoing negotiation of the design of individual aspects of care planning by the involved stakeholders should be at the forefront in order to ensure self-determination and participation. The supportive and hindering framework conditions for this are presented in this article. Current figures on the housing situation of people in need of care are put to the test. The concept of domesticity is critically examined.
