The understanding of culture is strongly influenced by biographical aspects and a person’s identity. What an individual perceives as their own identity arises through communicative interaction with others. In German healthcare practice, the understanding of culture is primarily focused on ethnic and religious affiliations. In international research, this understanding is broadened to include the self-interpretation of belonging to a lived culture, encompassing questions of social milieu, lifestyle, and identity. This understanding forms the basis for care according to the criteria of cultural appropriateness within the healthcare system, cultural sensitivity of healthcare institutions, and cultural competence of healthcare professionals.
