The aim of this article is to define digital assistance systems in the context of chronic care, to present selected examples, and to provide a critical evaluation. To this end, a definition of the term is first provided, followed by an introduction to current research areas such as Ambient Assisted Living and Digital Health. Building on this overview of the potential of digital assistance systems, the article then offers a practical examination of assistance systems already available on the market. The article concludes with a brief outlook on the ethical, legal, and social issues in the context of digital assistance systems, as well as questions regarding the financing and development of these systems.
