This article advocates for an examination of the discipline of design as a means of expanding competencies in the field of chronic care. To this end, the prevailing understanding of design is first delineated and specified as social design. The foundation of the described social design is participatory design. This is followed by a brief outline of two practical examples in which designers have successfully worked in the mode of participatory design within the context of health and care—specifically dementia and palliative care. The added value achieved through participatory design in these cases is explained, and a possible connection to chronic care is highlighted.
