This article discusses the concept of health literacy and its associated terminology, applying them to people with chronic illnesses. These relate to the systematic empowerment of those affected in order to achieve the greatest possible autonomy and self-efficacy. National health literacy focuses on the processing of health-related information, emphasising the areas of finding, understanding, evaluating and applying that information. To promote health literacy, people with chronic illnesses can be supported through empowerment, psychoeducation programs, and social network interventions. These represent a transfer between the theoretical concept of health literacy and its practical implementation, which can be influenced by societal and environmental factors.
