Without a doubt, patients who are interested in and considering a CI require a high degree of attention, empathy, and trust. The abrupt or gradual hearing loss over the years has left deep marks on their psyche, has created mistrust and uncertainty in communication situations, and has significantly restricted communication skills and willingness. They expect professional advice and reliable answers to all CI-related questions. They want to clarify these questions in an atmosphere that does not convey time pressure, that reflects the advisor’s interest in the patient’s questions, and that they are not avoided. The advisor is called upon to see patients not only in the categories of diagnostics and treatment options, but also to keep an eye on the sequelae and accompanying disorders of their hearing disorders. This requires skillful and appropriate conversation management, sufficient time, and a sense of tact from the advisor. This chapter extensively addresses the significance of hearing loss for the individual, discusses indications, possibilities, and limitations of a CI, and describes ways for a sensitive and clear preoperative clarification.
