The proposition of harmful effects of specific music genres is frequently promoted in the media. A number of empirical studies seem to confirm such media stereotypes about supposedly negative effects of specific music genres. Older works in particular point to clear correlations between individual superordinate music preferences and variables of mental and physical health, especially among adolescents. In this context, metal, rock, alternative, but more recently also rap and hip-hop have been placed under the general suspicion of causing behavioral problems and psychosomatic issues in adolescents. The present chapter seeks to examine the validity of this assumption. Studies from within the ranks of our own research do thereby not provide any evidence for harmful effects of the disputed music genres for adolescents. In fact, the results prove music reception and the use of music in everyday life for emotion modulation, together with personality traits to be of high relevance in this context. Within the scope of the research presented here, it is further shown that the findings of existing studies must be critically called into question due to possible sampling and generational effects.

摘要
