Chapter 5 is a contribution to the conceptualisation of power hierarchies in storytelling about the global. In scholarly debates, local migration-related lexica have gotten rather illustrative than systematic attention. The conceptual attempt to theorise and at the same time empirically test the relation between local Cameroonian terms (such as mbeng/bush) and the evaluation of migration destinations can therefore be considered a leading-edge approach. In a concrete manner, the chapter analyses how the imaginaries of migration destinations such as the Gulf-States, China, or South Africa are constructed and which sources they draw from. In simple words, the key question is: What are the criteria according to which a country is evaluated as ‘better’ than Cameroon and how is this ascription of status and rank put into words? These evaluations are expressed through spatial dichotomies and marked by nuances of valorisation and devaluation.
