Citations are essential in judicial decisions—as discussed in Chap.  3 , citations serve a variety of functions in the highly intertextual context of legal scholarship. They can establish connections between decisions and statutes, or between different judicial texts, thereby contributing to the process of decision-making, the reasoning behind decisions, and the legitimacy of judicial rulings.
