Lessing was one of the leading intellectuals in Europe. The leitmotif of his life was the question of the truth of religion and the authentic interpretation of religious tradition. His literary as well as his philosophical oeuvre is nothing but an attempt to fathom this truth and assert it with the strongest possible determination.
