In the Counter-Propositions to the Fragments of Reimarus, Lessing had published 53 paragraphs of an allegedly anonymous work, in which he drafts a history of the Jewish-Christian book religions. It is entitled The Education of the Human Race. When Lessing publishes the work in 1780, it comprises 100 paragraphs. Lessing, however, himself does not present himself as the author, but as the editor. With good reason.
