In December 1769, Lessing was appointed librarian of the Herzog August Bibliothek (ducal library) in Wolfenbüttel. This marked the end of a long period in which he had tried to gain a foothold in a profession – without becoming “the slave of an office” (Apr 3, 1760; B 11/1, 346) after all. Frederick II had been reluctant to appoint Lessing as Royal Librarian in Berlin – an unfortunate conflict with Voltaire, who had accused the young Lessing of having stolen one of his manuscripts, had soured the King’s relationship with Lessing. The Hamburg enterprise had failed, the founding of a publishing house had brought Lessing to the brink of ruin.
