In Hamburg, Lessing had also worked on a tragedy project that had occupied him ever since the late 1750s. The title had long been decided: Emilia Galotti. So had the underlying concept. Already in a letter to Friedrich Nicolai dated January 21, 1758, there is a mention of a ‘domestic Virginia’, ‘separated’ from any political interest (B 11/1, 267): “So you will see that it is nothing more than a modernised Virginia, freed from all political interest,” he says after the completion of the play in a letter to his brother Karl (Mar 1, 1772; B 11/2, 362).
