This chapter introduces the concept of work and, based on this, presents the principle of virtual displacements, which is of fundamental importance for applied mechanics and has a number of interesting applications. The concepts of potential and potential forces are then introduced and we also analyse non-rigid systems. The chapter concludes with a consideration of the concept of stability, and we will analyse how the stability of equilibrium positions can be classified. In addition, we will conclude with the determination of so-called influence lines for forces and moments on static systems.
