The popularity of Otfried Preußler’s children’s literature and its readership expanded with productions for the theatre stage, film adaptations, and radio play productions, according to German philologist Karin Richter. This study examines whether the same was true for the reception of media adaptations of his work in the German Democratic Republic, since on the one hand theatre and film played an important role in the country’s cultural strategy, and on the other Preußler’s work was widely distributed in the so-called Eastern Bloc countries. This article reconstructs the perception and dissemination of the author’s work in the other German state, focusing on theatre, cinema, and television, as well as audio recordings and radio.
