What do we do when we practice phenomenology? This can be summarized with a view to historical and contemporary phenomenology as follows: We describe typical experiences of concrete, situated, and historical individuals or groups and try to capture the general structures of these experiences, or of any possible experience at all. We are thereby directed towards the experience of things or the way of experiencing itself. We can therefore focus either on an experience or on that which is experienced, individually or in their necessary coexistence. Philosophically, we inquire back to the formal and genetic conditions of the possibility of this specific experience or of experience in general.
