An enterprise information system can be operated by the using company itself (on-premises) or by a service provider (“in the cloud”), with access via the Internet. A second aspect of deployment is the granularity in which application software is developed and operated: as a monolithic system or as a composition of fine-grain, largely independent services, as is intended with microservices.
