The integration through function call is illustrated using the example of Web services. The concept, the runtime process, the methodological approach at definition time, and the standards used, SOAP, WSDL, and UDDI, are discussed. The support by messaging systems for reliable transmission and other qualitative features are presented. In addition to the technical aspects, organizational ones are addressed. Web services are briefly compared with other approaches to integration through function call, especially REST.
