The European Enlightenment is closely linked to the process of secularization. Initially, this is expressed in the critiqueof religion, especially of the doctrines of Christianity and the exercise of power by the Catholic Church. Furthermore, religion is opposed by its own principles, among which is the claim of humanreason, to justify knowledge and ability in a secular manner.
