This chapter summarizes the current state of knowledge on prophylactic mesh implantation for permanent stoma placement. Although the literature is partly inconsistent, there is clear evidence in favor of the prophylactic implantation of plastic mesh in the placement of permanent colostomata. There are basically three options for positioning the mesh: the onlay position, the sublay (retrorectus) position and the intraperitoneal position, which can be performed very well with the aid of the surgical robot. The preoperative preparations and the various implantation techniques are described, including practical tips.
