Despite the vast number of meshes implanted worldwide over the past 60 years, relatively little is known about mesh explants. This chapter details observations and analyses derived from mesh explants removed for various reasons, such as infection, recurrence, organ erosion, chronic pain, or donor biopsy. The histological findings are particularly intriguing, revealing weak points in mesh construction and recurring undesirable outcomes. Scanning electron microscopy images offer new insights into the interactions and processes occurring within the patient’s body around the mesh.
