This chapter explains the first two steps of the general heuristic problem-solving procedure. In Step 1 “Verifying the discovered decision problem” questions are brought up. The answers to these questions show whether it is worth continuing to work on the decision problem. Step 2 “Problem analysis” is then explained. According to the authors, this is the most important and challenging step in solving a complex decision problem. It can be divided into three sub-steps which are described in detail and concretized with examples.
