This chapter deals with rationality in problem-solving. First, various ap-proaches to solving decision problems are presented and it is justified why a rational solution is aspired. A distinction is then made between substantial and formal rationality, and it is explained why substantial rationality is not possible. This is followed by the introduction of five requirements for formal rationality. Finally, the limits of formal rationality are pointed out.
