Following a long period of absence, there has recently been a resurgence of interest in Arendt’s work, especially in the theory as well as practice of the visual and performing arts, including installations and interventions in public space. Yet Arendt wrote mostly on literature, and we do not find much in her work on other kinds of art. Why, then, has Arendt’s work become so relevant to these art-practices? The paper seeks to answer this question by exploring the political problems discussed in her writings that are particularly relevant to many artists today—problems that she addresses with an urgency that is particularly appealing to the experience of the multiple crisis that we are facing today. More fundamentally, however, there is also something in her thinking that resonates with our era, and this is the fact that, in epistemological terms, we are moving into new territory.
