Product Safety

Product safety has an importance in automotive engineering that can hardly be overestimated, especially with regard to highly innovative products such as automated driving. This is a consequence of the fact that sales of products in this industry, which tend to be cost-intensive, naturally require consumers to have the necessary trust in them. This applies all the more if a sustainable business model is sought with such products. Against this background, the way in which some companies deal with the issue of product safety (which manifests itself, for example, in the use of misleading designations or the intensive testing of presumably insufficiently mature products on public roads) is reckless at best. In order to avoid undesirable developments, the following aspects are examined in detail in this central chapter: 1. taxonomies of product safety to facilitate discussions in this regard, 2. options for product validation (with surprising results), 3. a system classification based on these considerations, 4. an approach to quantifying the concept of risk, and finally 5. an approach to quantifying product safety based on this result.
