In this chapter we will give a first impression of the type of questions that we shall deal with in this textbook. We shall also put together a compendium of concepts and relationships which we can refer to in later chapters. Some of the topics in this introduction may not seem central to the subject of this textbook, for example the structure of the solar system, or the origin of the seasons. But these topics are so basic in astronomy that we will summarize a few facts about them.
