Whereas its roots can be traced to the field of anthropology at the beginning of the twentieth century, a notable interest in the concept of the threshold can be detected in various academic disciplines. Thus, since its beginning, the study of liminality has been highly interdisciplinary, and its value has been recognized across different fields of the humanities, including philosophy, psychology, literary studies, as well as cultural and social studies.

The study of liminality is as fruitful as it is complex.
