Madman in the Digital Age. Donald Trump’s Reversion to a Figure of the Cold War
摘要
The subject of this chapter is the Madman strategy, which US President Richard Nixon pursued during the Vietnam War, and which has also been applied to Donald Trump. In a first step, the genesis of the strategy is explored with a view to critiquing Nixon’s actions during the Cold War. Subsequently, the commonalities and disparities between the Madman strategies of Nixon and Trump are explored, which lie primarily in their differing media practices in a changed media landscape. Madman Trump is with his digital media use a completely different Madman than Nixon, who was constrained by traditional, mainstream media outlets.
