Consequences of decarbonization targets and sustainability on chassis development for OEMs in South America

Automotive Industry faces a huge challenge to transform its business in a more environmental friendly activity. This also impacts developing markets as Brazil and South America (SAM), a region of more than 20 markets where sustainability demands are being translated into pollutant emission and energy efficiency legislations in an environment of economic, social and infra-structure difficulties that jeopardizes the adoption of European solutions such as Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs). On top of that, commitments such as that initiated by Volkswagen Group to reduce CO2 emission of the whole value chain (cradle to grave) to zero until 2050, increase the pressure on all product development Areas. Chassis systems are not different, with a constant search for lower rolling resistance (for instance via tires development) and lighter components that must coexist, under an extreme market inherent challenging material cost restrictions, with safety and comfort customer demands and compete for space with other vehicle systems such as fuel tank, exhaust system and hybrid system battery. Sustainability is therefore the new added criteria for the already known trade balance in chassis development criteria. The objective of this paper is to describe the regional special drivers for vehicle evolution, how decarbonization subject is being treated and the related impact on chassis systems.
