The transformation of rotational to translational movements in the vehicle is carried out by rot-trans-converters. For example, planetary roller gear (PRG) and ball screw drives (BSD) impress with their robust design and high power density. For more than 20 years, Schaeffler has been developing rot-trans-converters for electromechanical steering systems, where these high-precision components perform their duties with low friction and low noise. In rear-axle steering systems, PRGs are used due to their higher efficiency and good self-locking behaviour compared to traditional trapezoidal screws. BSDs also continue to impress in braking technology: they are used in particular for electromechanical parking brakes and brake boosters to ensure fast and effective braking performance of the vehicle. In addition to braking and steering applications, numerous BSD and PRG product variants are in series production, e.g. for clutch actuators and exhaust gas recirculation systems. As an example, the selection and the design of the suitable rot-trans-converters will be shown based on customer requirements. Insights for more detailed analytical methods are applied depending on the selected subsystem. Beside quasi-static methods, which range from system observation with an elastic environment to contact pressure of the single ball contacts, the focus is also on multi-body dynamics, such as vibration analysis of rolling elements or the influence of shear forces on the rolling element contact of the respective subsystem. In the following, the authors describe the advantages of selected rot-transconverters and offer an outlook on new and innovative fields of application, such as electromechanical service brakes and Ride Height Adjustment in vehicles.
