In this chapter we consider the architecture of a data fusion system. We start by considering the data fusion system and how it communicates with its environment in a fault-tolerant manner. Next we consider different fusion networks starting from the single fusion cell and moving onto serial, parallel and iterative networks. We then consider different network topologies—centralized, decentralized and hierarchical—and their relative advantages and disadvantages.
